As Eli drove us toward his apartment in Lincoln Park, I asked questions.

“How do I get groceries?”

“We need groceries,” he corrected. “Us. So text me a list when I’m at work in the coming days, and I’ll pick it all up on my way home.”

“What about dinner tonight?”

“I thought we were ordering Italian?”

Because of The Godfather reference earlier. “Fine. But what about breakfast tomorrow when you have to go to work?”

“I’m not going to work tomorrow. I’m going to the First District to work with Brewster and Oakes on the case. Jer’s joining me.”

“Jer?”

“Well, yeah. Before we both got our new jobs, we were investigators.”

“No, I know, but—”

“Ian’s covering for Jer tomorrow and Friday, and Miro’s going to cover any press stuff for me.”

“That’s really nice of everyone.”

“We take care of our own.”

I nodded, him calling me his own almost more than I could bear. I wanted to be more, and he treated me like I was, but we never took that next step forward, and I wanted that more than anything. Especially now, when I was feeling vulnerable, the weight of my longing was more pronounced. “That doesn’t answer my question about breakfast.”

“I’ll make you breakfast before I leave.”

“I’m not a child. I can make my own breakfast.”

“Then why did you ask about it?”

“Because when you’re not in your own place and can’t follow your regular routine, everything gets weird and you worry about odd things.”

“Like breakfast.”

“Like having the power to make decisions about breakfast.”

“I get that.”

“Are you really going to be working with Brewster and Oakes?”

“Jer and I are meeting them at a diner near their office first thing in the morning to go over everything they have.”

“Why in the world would they share information with you?”

“Because they have to. And because I did them a solid by taking your protection off their plate. They didn’t want the responsibility of protecting you. They owe me one, even if their commander thinks the marshals service pulled another fast one on him.”

“Another?”

“Don’t worry about it.”

I sighed deeply. “Okay, so what will I be doing tomorrow? Just riding along?”

His scoff was loud. “I know what you’re doing.”

“I’m sorry?” I tried to sound as innocent as possible.

“You’re trying to see if I remember that I told you your ass is staying home. Which it is. You’re not going anywhere.”

“Yes, but—”

“You can catch up on your sleep, use my gym equipment, binge-watch Netflix or something on one of my many other streaming platforms,” he finished cheerfully.

“Watch TV?”

“Depending on what we find out tomorrow, it’s possible that we can go for a run later in the evening. I’m not keeping you prisoner, but you have to be conscious that your colleague died in front of you today and we have no idea why.”

“What if Senan was collateral damage and the killer was gunning for me?” I asked him, suddenly broken. “If that’s what really happened, then Senan’s dead because of me.”

Eli took a breath. “I honestly don’t think the murder had anything to do with you.
